Zulu Basket Scholarship Story 2009
Scholarships for South African Students:
Since 1997, LATTICE has paid hundreds of school fees for students in KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa where students must pay for tuition, books and uniforms. All scholarships have been funded by profits from Zulu basket sales and donations from LATTICE members and friends.
LATTICE members visited South Africa in the summer1999 when they were awarded a Fulbright Hays Group Study Abroad. Later that year nine South African students with their teacher visited Michigan for three weeks and two basket and bead artists visited as well. Since that time, many LATTICE members and their students have created links with South African students, teachers and administrators.

The goal of the Kenyan Interest Group is to establish sustainable connections/"bridges" between Kenya and the mid-Michigan education community, promoting a two-way conversation with authentic and purposeful interaction.
- Explore possible connections
- Meet with local Kenyans to learn about various aspects of Kenyan culture and promote dialogue about common issues

Some of the LATTICE teachers have been meeting once a month to discuss literature with a global perspective. Taking advantage of the rich international resources in our group, we make sure that we have representation from the countries or regions that are presented in each book.
As a result of this, we’ve learned much more about the cultures and feel more comfortable using the books in our schools because we are more knowledgeable about which aspects of each book are accurate and which are not. We haven’t been looking so much for the “perfect” books as much as we want to read a wider variety of books and be more prepared to teach them well.

Summary:
Five LATTICE members participated in a 6 week project at the Wilkshire Early Education School in Haslett, Michigan during January and February of 2007. They are Kamila Rosolova (Czech Republic), Wiline Mallory Troullioud-Oudot (France), Dwi Agus Yuliantoro (Indonesia), Geofred Osoro (Kenya), and Norseha Unin (Malaysia). The first week focused on introductions and briefly sharing information about each person’s home country with the kindergarten children.
The following five weeks allowed for each person to visit one of the five classrooms and make a connection with the children and teacher. Pictures, stories, songs, personal artifacts, and music added a depth to their learning experience and helped form a connection to the country being discussed.
